Gothic Lolita is actually a sub-genre of Gothic fashion, characterized by doll-like clothing and associated accessories. The appearance and make of the clothing takes its cue from Victorian, Rococo, and Edwardian influences in fashion and make. Appearing to have originated in the late 1970’s in Japan, the terms describing this category allude to the multi-fashions of such worn by Japanese teens. In America, however, this category is more noted as “Elegant Gothic Lolita” and is worn as usually all black with some white accents. Breaking this category down further, the styles now include white with some black accents, punk with some bright colors added to the hair, clothing or accessories, and a “gory goth—gory or grotesque elements, adding a rather injured look to the entourage—bandages on the arms, staining that looks like blood, for example. Sweet Lolita is a term used to categorize clothing that encompasses soft pastels and styles referencing a more “child-like” quality to the clothing. Blending the dark, black aspects of Gothic with the sweet, youthful Lolita, one has the Gothic Lolita fashion category with it’s fun and exiting subcategories to offer an intriguing style suitable for the varied tastes of those who explore this type of fashion.
In trying to understand this category further in my own mind, I tried to capture this style in reference to the definition of Lolita. By definition a “Lolita” is merely a sexually precocious young girl. When looking at Gothic fashions, they do appear to embody a rather sensual feel and allure, and adding the Lolita twist is a novel play on style. Whether the Gothic influence enhances the Lolita fashion genre or the other way around really shouldn’t matter. Overall, this category provides one an outlet for expressing their Gothic persona in an alluring, youthful manner.
